Planning - Explanation

When planning, we separated the tasks out evenly for the three members to do. It was important that we shared the work load in order to maintain the same quality of work throughout the production. We worked together to manage deadlines and communicated to make sure that final production of our music video had the best possible outcome. Overall the group has worked very hard to great this music video and I believe that shows in our final production.

Actors
For us, the process of selecting actors was something we felt was important to the success of the video. The quality is of performance within acting is something which can define the video or could make it may seem amateurish. Therefore, the quality of acting was something we wished to be a substantial standard which supports the quality of our camera work and mise en scene.

It was all about equilibrium in regards to acting, we wanted a mix between authenticity and naturalistic acting which could portray our artist in a realistic manner. What we wanted was an actual couple to perform in our external shots to ensure we had a realistic representation of a couple and whilst employing actors who could have performed this role would have granted us professionalism and a representation of a couple, we wanted to take this a step further and having a real couple to enhance the emotion and realism surrounding our video.

With this in mind, we sought balance by opting to get an A Level drama student to perform as our artist in order to a degree of professionalism and authenticity in our video. Furthermore, we wanted a performer who could accurately and emotionally lip sync to the song and competently play guitar but also has a presence on camera alongside being able to perform consistently on a set but also in front a camera. This was something we were keen to get the most out of our video.

Actors

Martha Carpenter and Thor Forster – These actors played the roles of the couple who are in the relationship, as the pair are a genuine couple, this will allowed our music video to be played out between a couple who share the emotions of love but the challenge will be whether or not they can adapt to a given circumstance and respond in a naturalistic way on camera. This authenticity could not, in our opinion, be replicated.

Connor Southwell – The reason for Connor’s inclusion is his involvement with drama and also the experience of him being in our thriller. His comfortably and willingness to perform in front of a camera is reason for his selection. Furthermore, his ability to perform naturalistically, whilst adapting to direction makes him a prime candidate for inclusion.

As our chosen song is of the independent genre, costume and style convention is vital. Artists of that genre form their style that is similar to their audience, to covey this idea of a close relationship between audience and identity. Common brands such as Carhartt, Dickies and Burberry are often seen within this genre; so we made sure to exemplify this convention within our music video. Indie clothing often consists of vintage and work wear, brands such as Dickies have been taken from hegemony and work wear and implemented within the Indie style, as displayed in the screenshot. In terms of bands from the genre that we have taken influence from, the band Moose Blood gave us several ideas, for example the big winter coats and shirts, as shown in the screenshot.

In addition, one particular bands gave us heavy influence, The Neighbourhood, whom produce Indie Rock style music often addressing emotional issues, much like Choose Wisely, the artist of our choice. The clothing and style of the Neighbourhood is something we reflected within our piece, the use of long sleeve buttoned up shirts and dark trousers. As you can see from both pictures, colour isn't a huge feature in either of the brands clothing, so in terms of colour for our male character its very limited, using mainly on the dark browns and light browns. As you can see we have taken many influences into our characters clothing and costume as we feel it's essential to the indie genre, to create an identity for the artist.

Male Actor

Our male actor is too be wearing a long sleeve Burberry style shirt, conforming with the brand identity of the genre and the intertextuality of wearing a shirt. Combined with this he shall be wearing Dickies 874 Work Pants in order to conform to the conventions of the Indie Genre. This outfit while simply a shirt and trousers conforms heavily to the genre and will make the audience connect more and relate more to the story line, characters and message of the song.
